FAKES
FAKES are small projects I pursue in my spare time. They're fake, practice pieces. They pop out of podcasts I'm listening to, things I'm seeing, and friends with suggestions.
They're a way to stay fresh. I am hoping they make my portfolio feel a little more marketable, and at the same time improve my skills. I will do a few of these a week, for as long as it takes. Eventually REAL freelance work will take its place, but until then, FAKES will keep me productive.

Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic
Concept: This book is real, published by the Hamlyn Group Limited in 1988. I found an old copy of it in a used books store. It has no cover (just book cloth) so I decided to make one. The hand drawn type on the title page was beautiful, so I worked with that and applied it to the following design:

Inspiration: Ben's Home Brewing Dreams.
Concept: A stay at home dad brews beer in his free time.
Labels would be printed white on a clear adhesive. Classy.

I need a publisher to put on my book cover designs. I decided to play off the idea that I'd be using placeholder text for a lot of my FAKES. The publisher's name is Lorem Ipsum. Here are some studies:

I decided to convert the text cursor into a strong, serifed shape that can be easily shrunk down to a book's spine. Here is the final result:
